Kaleb De Keyrel invited to sign autographs with Antron Brown
Antron Brown and Kaleb De Keyrel
John Conway called us a couple weeks ago and asked us if we would be able to be at an invite only car and bike show. He explained that Matco tool does it every year for their local customers. He stated that Antron Brown an NHRA top fuel driver would also be there signing autographs. Matco tools would have free food and lots of giveaways.
So we committed to the event and tonight was the night. With the NHRA drag races at Brainerd International Raceway this weekend the excitement was in the air.
De Keyrel Racing setup for the night
It was unbelievable how many people thought that there had not been motorcycles racing at Brainerd International Raceway since AMA Pro Racing race there last. It was a great night to just let people know there is a local AMA Professional Road Racing team. That there are still road races at BIR and to see some cool cars, trucks, motorcycles and tractors.
All three of these tractors the owner drove into place. Very cool
Matco tools had all the local reps on hand with lots of displays. They gave away ticket to the NHRA drags, hats, shirts, boots and a new $1900 tool box. It was a fun night with free food and a chance to meet new people. Thank You to John Conway and Matco Tools for the invite.

De Keyrel Racing goes to the Indianapolis MotoGP Race.
The Indy trip started out with a not so long 9 hour drive from White Bear Lake, MN to Indianapolis, IN. We were going to Indy to help out a good friend Jon Foy. Jon is another AMA Pro racer in SuperSport and also races the Harley Davidson XR 1200 class. At Indy Jon would be racing the XR 1200. We drove all night and arrived at 6:30am. We meet up with Jon and headed to Charley Browns for some breakfast. The AMA credentials office was the next stop at 8 when they opened. After getting out credentials we went inside and waited for the AMA officials to let us know it was our time to move in. Mason and I decided we could not waste any time just sitting around. So we head over to the MotoGP paddock to talk to people and check out the MotoGP setups.
After we got everything set up. The track was open for inspection. I got ready and headed out before Jon. I was able to spin a couple laps with Cal Crutchlow. It was great to be able to see the new layout and surface for the new Indy track. It was a lot wider and just a lot more open and flowing then when I raced it in 2010. I was able to spin a lap with Jon Foy after I had a couple laps in. It was good to be able to go over the track together. They shut the track down and it was time to head to the hotel. Joey Lopez a friend of ours from Indy had lined a hotel up for us for the weekend. We programed the GPS and off we went. We went out to dinner with Chaplin Raymond Rizzo and Nick McFadden. We had some delicious pizza then it was time to get a good nights rest for the big day tomorrow. Nick McFadden ended up staying with us in our hotel that night for he had not made plans yet were he would sleep.
Practice for the Harley-Davidson XR 1200 on Friday was at 11:55. So that was the first thing we had in the morning. Then qualifying 1 wasn’t till later in the day. We got to watch most of the MotoGP Practice. It was really cool to see the teams up close and just get to watch the amazing event Dorna puts on.
Jon Foy had never been to Indy or a MotoGP race before so he had a steep learning curve ahead of him. It was a good day but he just needed a little more time to learn the track. After we watched MotoGP we went out to the Indy mile dirt track races! A lot of the motor GP guys were at the Indy mile and we got to meet Barry from storage wars too!
Saturday the XR 1200s were on track at 8 o’clock so we had to get there bright and early to get everything set up and ready to go. John was 21st in the morning warm-up and we didn’t have anything else to do till 4 o’clock. So we got to watch the GP guys qualifying. Then it was the XR 1200 Race 1!
Started to sprinkle before the first race and it wasn’t the best conditions but they still went had a unbelievable race. The XR 1200 class is extremely competitive and as always there like a pack of 5 to 7 up front. Jon finished 24th in the race and would have another chance tomorrow to try to improve tomorrow. It was a great effort for his first time being at the track and experiencing a MotoGP race for the first time also.
Sunday the only thing we had to do was Jon’s race that was out at about 3 o’clock. We got to watch the Moto3, Moto2 and MotoGP races. All of which were very intense and exciting. There was lots of passes made in the lead packs. After we watched the GP race it was time for the XR 1200 to do their final race.
Jon and I went over the track map one last time and Jon got ready to go. He got an awesome start and was running about 19th when there was a red flag. There were quite a few riders that had gone down at different times before the red flag. The red flag gave them all time to get their bikes fixed and ready for the restart. Jon was pumped and ready for the 5 lap sprint to the finish.
Jon got another good start. He was dropping his lap time every lap he was on the track. It was amazing just how much time he had gained just in turn one with confidence. Jon rode awesome to his best AMA Pro Road Racing finish of his career a 17th. Jon continually improved all weekend and we all had a ton of fun!
But the fun wasn’t over yet. Before we made the long 9 hour drive home. We headed to Joey and Michelles house to shower up. Than it was off to Fogo De Chao a Brazilian steakhouse for an 8pm reservation. It has now become a tradition and it is very cool that all the GP guys are there.
So Jorge Lorenzo and Tommy Hayden were at the table right behind us. Marc Marquez’s dad brother and crew were in front of us. Marc, Scott Redding, Aleix and Pol Espargaró were all there also! We got to meet a lot of nice people. Joey introduced us to a wonderful couple from the UK that live 40 minutes from Silverstone. Murray and Jenni a great couple that are from Australia. Phillips Island looks like an amazing track. A gentle man that is the project manager for PB for the eastern hemisphere. A couple from Toronto Canada. Thank You Joey. It was a awesome time and a perfect way to end an amazing weekend!

Kaleb De Keyrel is in second place for Roadracing World’s AMA Young Guns Award!
I was just informed today that I am currently in second place for the Roadracing World’s AMA Young Guns Award. If you currently receive the Roadracing World magazine you would have seen that every year they do an article on the young riders and pick a handful to be in the running for the award.
If you are chosen to be a young gun and are running in AMA Supersport or Daytona Sportbike classes, then you are in the running for a $2,500 first place prize. If you accumulate the most points, then you are the young gun rider of the year! I am currently in second place behind Jake Lewis going into the last round of AMA Pro Road Racing at New Jersey!
It is awesome that Roadracing World magazine has this award for the young riders. I am honored to even have been chosen to be in the article, let alone being in the running. Whether it is Jake Lewis, myself or Garrett Gerloff, I feel Roadracing World will be well represented. Here is a link to the top five as it sits right now: http://www.amaproracing.com/rr/awards/

De Keyrel Racing gains momentum at Mid Ohio!
Mid Ohio started out with the long journey from Laguna Seca, California to the racetrack at Mid Ohio. But before we went to the race track. Roger Hayden invited us out to his house in Owensboro, Kentucky. We did three days of training on road bikes and 100s dirt tracking. I had a great week there and was ready to get to Mid Ohio.
We arrived Thursday night and got everything set up up Friday. Saturday, I got up and it was pouring rain. Which was interesting, because AMA does not usually race at Mid Ohio in the rain. It basically rained off and on scattered showers all day and it was really hard for the AMA to make a decision on what they wanted to do for the day. We ended up getting one session of practice. I ended up 11th in practice, but wasn’t feeling very confident in the track or the bike. I was taking it easy and not really pushing too hard. I didn’t want to crash and wrecked the bike for the race. It was raining and to be honest the track felt like it had a really low Grip level. It was a good practice though and I got to see the track before the race.
Sunday, we had a quick warm-up in the morning and the track was really greasy from the rain the day before. The track was coming in as the day went on, so I was pretty confident going into the race that the track would be to almost 100%. Race 1, I came around the first lap and I was running in fifth. I noticed my number on the board and it said +10. At first I didn’t know what I did wrong, I wasn’t sure if I made a risky move on the first lap or if I had jumped the start or what was going on. I just decided to continue to move forward and forget about what just happened, and try to put in the back of my mind and keep pushing and charging for the battle for third.
About halfway through the race, I finally made the pass for third. I decided that I should probably try to push really hard and try to get myself to the 10 second distance. I ended up making a mistake in the midst of pushing hard and dropped back to fifth. Towards the end of the race, I was feeling a loss of traction in the left-hand side of the tire. I was trying to figure it out, it almost was like something was leaking fluid on to my tire, but it was only happening when I was in the left corners. In the end, I finished 6th with the 10 second penalty. I felt good about my pace and just wanted to get a fresh start for Race 2.
Race 2, I started off a little to cautious, because of my jump start in Race 1, so I ended up in 5th coming off the line. I was right in the mix on the first lap, but the front runners ended up getting away, including the 4th place rider in front of me. I had some work to do if I wanted to catch them. I knew I had the speed to catch 4th, because lap after lap I could see I was inching closer. I knew I had to carry a good fast pace, but be consistent and make no mistakes, if I wanted to catch him. That is exactly what I did. I put my head down and eventually caught up to him on the last lap. I wanted to wait so he couldn’t counter back, but I didn’t want to wait too long, so I out broke him going into turn 5 and never looked back. I ended up forth in the race. I was pretty disappointed I let the leaders get away at the beginning. It was another good weekend though and I had a lot of fun on our three week road trip! I can’t wait till New Jersey! I will be training really hard to get myself prepared to battle!

De Keyrel Racing’s first time running at Laguna Seca in the DSB class was a great success!
Our trip started off with a long 34 hour journey to California. Before
we headed to Laguna Seca Raceway, we stopped at Tagger Designs shop to
see where he creates all of his awesome helmet designs. It was great
to finally get a chance to meet Tag in person.
We went to Venice Beach and got a chance to hang out with Pearson Knight.
There was an awesome skatepark that we were able to check out and of
course the ocean !!!
Then, Mason and I did some training at the Redbull Performance training facility with
Aaron Colton. We got a chance to do some pretty unique and fun
workouts that were very challenging. It seemed like you were not
working out, even though “WE WERE”.
When we finally arrived at Laguna we went straight to the hotel and
got a good nights rest and got ready for the next big day. We got all
set up and went through tech. After that, we were then able to ride to
Zuma around the track to get an idea of the track layout. This would
be my first time at Laguna, so I would have to learn this difficult track quick.
Friday morning, I went out for practice and I ended up 24th. We made some
changes to the bike and went out for Qualifying 1. I went faster and
qualified 21st. I would have Qualifying 2 Saturday to try and improve
my time, but this track is difficult to learn and I felt one step
behind. I contacted Penske suspension and explained to them what the
bike was doing in certain areas and what we needed to make the bike
handle better. Then they looked at my track map and made some changes
for Q2.
The bike and I were feeling better and better every time I
went on the track, but it just felt like I was still missing something
that was holding my times back. I ended up 26th in Qualifying 2. I got
faster, but everybody else did as well. I went through my track map
with Roger Hayden and Jake Lewis that night, because I knew I still
was missing something. I sorted all of that out. We made some more
changes to the bike for Sunday mornings warm-up. I went out for
morning warm-up and had the things I was doing wrong in the back of my
mind. I just made adjustments Jake and Roger told me to make and ended
up 12th in warm-up and did a 1:29.9 almost a second faster than what I
qualified with. I now knew that I found what I was missing. I was
confident and ready to go for the race. I knew it was going to be a
challenge starting from 26th, but I just went out and got a pretty
good start. I passed as many people as I could in the first lap.
After the chaos of the first lap was over, I found myself in a little battle
with Jason Aguilar. I knew we had to just put our heads down and work
together to catch the huge group in front of us. The group in front
was 9th all the way through 17th. I just kept slowly gaining on them
and making up time. I just charged ahead to catch them. I ended up
running a 1:28.8 pushing hard and to run with them. Little after
halfway, I finally caught the group in front of me. I worked my way
past Bryce Prince and Stefano Mesa. Shortly after, I found myself
right behind Kyle Wyman. After putting in all the hard work to catch
the group, I ended up getting a little too greedy. I pushed it too
hard in the last corner and ended up going in the grass a little bit.
That incident killed my drive for the front straight. I ended up about
six bike lengths behind the group again. I worked my way back up to
the group, but had to finish 17th.
It was a fun weekend with a lot of good learning experience as racing
against all the faster riders in the Daytona Sportbike class. I was
really happy to get down to a 1:28.8 lap time. We now have a great set
up for the next year when we come back to Laguna and I’m actually in
Daytona Sport bike racing for a championship! That was the whole
reason of even going to Laguna this weekend to learn a new track and
gain valuable experience for next year. I have to give a huge thank
you to all my sponsors and the De Keyrel Racing team for working hard
this weekend and getting my bike performing awesome! Can’t wait till
Mid Ohio!
