Mason De Keyrel finishs second in the USGPRU Moriwaki race
Mason De Keyrel finishs second in the USGPRU Moriwaki race
The weekend started with a long drive.
We left Salt Lake city with our grandpa De Keyrel Wednesday night and arrived at Beloit IL. Thursday night after a 23 hour drive. Thank You Grandpa. We set up our pit. My mom and dad meet us there. My dad started in on bike maintenance and my mom on washing cloths and gear.
Mason and I got up early and went for a run to warm up for the day. After the run we set out all our gear and started to prep for the day. Than we went up to check in for the test and tune day. We were informed that MotoVid was the one that was renting the track and were not allowing anyone under the age of 16 to ride in the test and tune day. Prepaid or not. We had to watch our competition learn a track we had only been to one before.
Friday night one of the racer brought down some homemade fajitas, Cheese and salsa. I tried a little. Mason skipped it all. My dad had two and my mom one. You will understand the details later.
Saturday
Saturday morning Mason and I again started our day with a run. We ran out to the front gate to stretch and meet up with my aunt Paula and my cousins ( Carlie, Lexie, Tashia, Shayna ) My great uncle/aunt Bob and Diane also came. It was going to be a great weekend of racing and family with my grandma and grandpa there too.
After we ran back we found out that my dad was sick. He worked on our bikes all day and made sure we were on the track.
Kaleb
After two short practice sessions. I was up for the MWSB race. I got a good start and was running second. I rode hard but was shuffled back to fourth. That was ok because I had learned a couple of lines from the other riders.
Next up was the MWGP race. I got an ok start and was battling in the top four. We were passing lap after lap and I again ended up in fourth.
Mason
Next up was Mason in the Moto3 race. He rode awesome. Mason had an Ok start and worked his way up to fourth by the end of the race. It was fun to watch.
Last race of Saturday
The last race of the day for me was the MWSS race. I got a great start and grabbed the hole shot. I had pulled a two second lead and was running up front. As the race progressed on we started to get into lappers. On the last lap I made a desision to go under a lap rider and he moved directly in my line to get out of the way. I was again shuffled back. this time to third and on the last lap. I continued to charge and pushed my way back up to second with a drafting pass at the line. It was a fun day and I was looking forward to Sunday. Hoping my dad would be feeling better.
Sunday
My dad, Me and my mom were now all sick. Food Poisoning. No run this morning. I went out for about six laps of practice and can in to rest. Mason on the other had was out tearing it up. I thought he was going to run out of gas he stayed out so long.
First race up was the GTU 25 minute race and it was raining. I love riding in the rain but I was so sick I was going to do the best I can. The race started and I got a great jump. I was pulling away. I had about a four second lead by corner six. Exiting six I was excellerating hard and hit a paint marking that the instructors of training program had put down on the track to show the best line. I lost traction and high sided. I was so bummed. I got a ride back in the crash truck and tried to get my dad to fix my bike so I could get back in the race. My dad told me to go rest and started in on fixing my bike even though he was still sick.
Mason was up next in the Moto3 race. Palmer pulled the hole shot with Mason right behind him. Mason rode a great race with a second place finish. I did not get to see it but Mason came back and told me all about it. He was pumped.
Start
My second race of the day was the MWSS race. I was sitting on the starting line going to do my best and make the most out of it. The flag flew and we took off. I was running in fouth place and off the pace of the leaders. I desided to settle in for fourth. Going into turn one I heard a rider coming up the inside of me. I moved over to let them by. The rider came in to hot and took out my front end. I was on the ground for the second time of the day. I rode the crash truck back again. When I got back to the pit my dad said just call it a day and regroup for the next weekend. I went in and went to bed. I had crashed twice and my mom had not even know for she was in the camper sick all morning.
At least one rider was on for the De Keyrel Racing crew.
Mason was up again in the USGPRU Moriwaki MD 250 race. Mason got a great start and had the lead. On lap two he was passed and moved back into seconded. Mason fought hard and took the lead back a lap latter. It was pass after pass. Mason ended up finishing the race in second, but should keep his head up for it was awesome to see him ride so well.
Thank you to all our sponsors and my Grandma/Grandpa De Keyrel, Aunt Paula, my causins, Diane, Bob, Jerry and Dona for your support and comming to this race weekend.
Regrouping for the next race weekend. ( My dad is still sick as I write this and has been going to work and working on bikes) Love you dad

De Keyrel Racing has a huge weekend in July with CRA
De Keyrel Racing has a huge weekend in July with CRA
Mason set a personal best of 1:54.6
Kaleb with a 1:37.3 ( 600cc short course record is a 1:36.5 )
Friday Practice
Practice on friday was a make the best of it day. If it was sunny in the front it was raining in the back. There were two full wet sessions and the rest were a mix. De Keyrel Racing made the best out of it and tryed to get in a good test.
Saturday
Mason and I got up and went for a run. With the July CRA race being the Show-N-Go weekend too. We stretched out or run and looked at all the cars and Rigs in the pits. We suited up for the day and headed to the riders meeting. At the riders meeting they stated no horse play and that wheelie were going to be punished with a $50 fine. I reminded myself to focus on winning and no celebration wheelies. Riders meeting always ends with a Prayer from Jim Wiles. Every race the circle keeps getting bigger and bigger. It is awesome.
Fast practice was up first. Each group would only get two sessions so I went out right away. I was a little off pace after the two sessions but I was not worried. We had practiced the B bike and I am usually about 2 seconds slower on that bike. Mason was in the slow practice and was tearing it up. Everytime he hit the track he would be in a big group and they would push eachother to go faster. Mason and Sean Colton would come in laughing and high fiving on how awesome it was.
The races started with MWSS ( Expert ) up first. The day was going to be busy with me racing 9 classes and Mason racing 3. We had deside to run pump gas for the weekend to cut costs. We had also entered late so all of my starts were from second and third row. I knew I had my work cut out for me. That was ok. All of these races are just practice to get me faster.
The first three races I was in for the day I felt like I was riding my best but just could not get my times down to where I had run. I told my dad I just cant figure out why I can’t get my times any lower. I had a 5th (MWSS),4th (HWSS) and a 4th (UNLSS) in the first three races. My dad and I deside to make the switch to race gas after lunch. We had been working on measuring fuel in the tank this weekend too. So this would also let us know the fuel consumtion differences too. I immediately noticed a difference. I still had room for improvement in my self and ended up with a 3rd (MWSB), 3rd (HWSB) and a 4th in (UNLSB).
After the afternoon worker break I got myself togeather and asked GOD for help in these next three races. The morning did not start off to well so I new I could use a little help from GOD.
Over the load speeker we heard 3rd call for MWGP. I asked GOD to give me a safe clean race. That is all I can ask for. GOD gave me even more. I rode home to a 2nd place finish in the MWGP race. Next up was HWGP. I was running in fourth place most of the race and a little ways back. I realed the top three in and with two to go I made the pass from third to first comming out of corner two. I held onto the lead for my first WIN of the weekend. In UNLGP I finished out the day with a 2nd. I was happy with my results. The CRA has some fast guys on 750 and 1000cc bikes so it felt great to do good in these two classes.
Mason pushed hard all day and finished with 2nd in all three classes. He was even beating most of the Experts.
Sunday
I was looking forward to Sunday because I always do better on Sunday. Mason and I went out for a run to warm up for the day. Parctice again would run Fast/Med/Slow. I had talked to Shane Fletcher the night before after church. He told me to try a gearing change to see what I thought. We changed but not as far as he suggested. Practice started off great. I was up to pace with great lap times in the first session. The races would run the same as Saturday for it was a double sprints weekend. I started the day off with 2nd (MWSS), 2nd (HWSS) and a 4th (UNLSS). I started the day out great and new I would be in the mix for the next couple of races after lunch. I ran up and did an interview than went back to the pit to focus. I won the first two races after lunch. (MWSB, HWSB) I so wanted to do a wheelie for the fnas and corner works after my second win. I kept my cool and my front tire on the ground. I finished the day out with all 2nds in the last three races.
Mason again continued to drop his lap times and finished the day out with all 2nds. It was fun to see him excited all weekend.
The weekend went great and I ran my fastest lap on the compatition course at Brainerd International Raceway. I ran a 1:37.337 and I am inching closer to the 600cc track record. I feel this was one of my best weekends up at BIR. I will be back again in August for my last run on the compition course before repaving and widening the track. It was an awesome weekend and I would like to THANK all of our sponsors for making it possible. Now off to Miller for Yamaha School of Champions. GOD BLESS

Mason De Keyrel is the youngest rider to get a license with the CRA
Mason De Keyrel is the youngest rider to get a license with the CRA
The Central Roadracing Association (CRA) runs events at Brainerd International Raceway(BIR) located in Brainerd Minnesota. BIR has hosted World Superbike and AMA events in the past. The CRA has a long history in road racing. Even with their long history, there have been very few racer under the age of 16. The CRA’s policy with minor racers is to petition the cheif stewart with a resume and ask for permission. It has alway been a case by case decision. The most recent racers to petition the CRA for a license were Aaron Colton age 14. Kaleb De Keyrel age 13 and now Mason De Keyrel Age 12.
Hi, My name is Mason De Keyrel #54
Hi, My name is Mason De Keyrel #54. I am 12 years old. I started racing motocross at the age of 6. Started road racing with the CMRA at age 8. I am licensed with the CMRA, USGPRU, CCS, WERA and now the CRA. This new license is huge for me. We live in Minnesota and up until now. I was not able to race at all locally. This not only meant my family had to travel, but also anyone who wanting to watch me. I can now show my friends and other racers what I love to do at my home track of BIR.
Going through the CRA Licensing process
As I said before, The process for each rider is different for minors in the CRA. If you are a youth rider reading this I would like to let you know what my process was like. Before I start remember. At the time I petitioned the CRA I held a license with CCS, USGPRU, WERA and CMRA. These all helped me get my license early.
May weekend 2012: The weekend started off with class room Friday morning at 7:30am. The class room went for 2 hours ending with a test and each group of riders getting assigned to an instructor. Nick Campbell and Shane Keaveny are the lead instructors. ( both great guys ) For Friday practice, I was assigned to Robert Pretts. Robert did a great job working with me all day long. We talked about lines. Where safe places are to pass and just general track rules. The day ended with the new rider race. I looked up my grid spot and headed to the line. The races started and it was 600 through me for bike sizes. I was on my Moriwaki MD 250H. I got an ok start and was working my way up through the field. With two laps to go I was given the meatball flag. I came into pit lane on the next lap and was told to go to my pit. I was mad. The stewart came over and talked to me and said that I did a great job but they just did not feel comfortable giving me my license yet. He asked me if it would be OK to have me race some races this weekend so they could continue to watch me. I raced 2 races Saturday and 2 races Sunday. It was a fun weekend. They gave me a provisional license on Saturday night and just wanted to watch me again in June.
June weekend: The weekend started the same with class room. The CRA had me practice in slow practice instead of with the new riders. I had been assigned to Zac Hughes for Friday practice. Friday ended with the new riders race again. I went to grid and was ready to race. The new riders race was fun. I finished the race with no meatball flag. After the race I was given my license by Nick and Shane. I was now the youngest rider in the CRA to get a license. I would like to Thank Shane, Nick, Robert, Zac, the CRA stewarts and board members and all of the racer/CRA memebers for allowing me to race with you.
If you are ever in MN and want some fast racers to race with. Please look up the CRA.

Friday Practice
I went out for Friday practice on a used up set of DUNLOP USA DOT tires. First practice went great and I was running about the same times I was running last year at Brainerd on the competion course. The used up USA tires were working great so I started to push. I continued to push through the next couple session and put down a good lap time. The last session of the day I went out with Robert Pretts (one of the fast local racers at the CRA). We had some fun and the day ended on a great note. I knew if I got a good night sleep I would be even faster in the morning.
Mason De Keyrel becomes the youngest rider
Mason De Keyrel is now the youngest rider to ever get licensed by the CRA ( Central Road Racing Association ) Friday Mason had to sit though the new riders class for a second time this season with the CRA. It all payed off Friday night when he completed the new riders race and was given his CRA race license. No More GREEN SHIRT
Saturday Racing
I got up and Mason and I went for run. Then got my leathers on and was ready to ride. I did Saturday practice on the B bike ( Thank You to Sean and Aaron Colton for this bike ) trying to get it a little more dialed in incase we had to race it. We were hoping nothing would happened so that I would need to race it this weekend but it was great know if we did it was there. My A bike was set to race with a new set of DUNLOP USA DOT tires. We had deside we were going to race on pump gas on saturday to cut costs. The first race was MWSS. I had a good race but I was just not on pace with the lead group and finished 4th. The next race was HWSS the Dunlop USA tires were holding in there great. I finished with another 4th. Next up was the UNLSS race. This race would have a lot of the fast guys on the 1000and 750’s. I was racing a 600. I was gaining on the lead pack but would end up finishing 6th place. The MWSB race was a great race I got a great jump. I ran in first place the whole first lap but Shane Fletcher out broke me going into turn 3. I made a hard charge to keep up with him but I was not close enough to pass him back. I pushed hard and finished the race in second. I continued to get great starts the rest of the day and finished of with a second in MWGP and thirds in HWSB and HWGP. Overall Saturday was a great day and I ran up front on the same set of Dunlops all day.
Mason first race was the ULSB race. He battled with one of the local Expert racers all the way to the line. Mason finished second for the novice group. A radiator leak caused Mason to miss the ULGP race. Mason was riding great and looking forward to racing again on Sunday.
Saturday night finished up with a church service by John Anderson and Jim Wiles. Sean Colton gave his faith story to the 33 people in attendance. It was awesome. What a great day.
Sunday Racing
After a good nights sleep Mason and I started our day off again with a run. I like to get my body warmed up and ready for the day.
Sunday practice started off great. We rode the B bike and were getting the setup really close to what I wanted. My lap times matched Saturdays race times and I knew I could go faster on my A Bike. My grandpa De Keyrel talked my dad into going back to R-Tech racing fuel for Sundays races. First race up was MWSS. I got a great jump and was running in the lead. On the second lap Shane Fletcher got by and I hung right with him. I got passed on the last lap going into 3 and was running third. We continued to pass for the rest of the lap and crossed the finish line togeather. I ended up on the podium in third. I was happy with that. I new I was running faster than yesterday. The HWSS race was next and I ened up third again. I knew I could do better. I got a bad start in the UNLSS race and was running in sixth place. It took me to long to get around riders and the leaders were getting away. On the last lap I moved into 5th place with a pass on the brakes going into turn 3. I put my head down and realed in the 4th place rider. Going into the carousel I noticed him drifting a little wide. I made the pass on the inside with us drag racing to the line. I finished a hrad earned 4th. In the MWSB race I took the holeshot again. Ran up front until Shane got by. I ran with him as close as I could and ended up second. The HWSB race was when everything started to change. I jumped out into the lead and lead from start to finish. It was the first win of the weekend and a huge confidence buster. It felt great. MWGP again I lead into the first turn. Shane and I battled hard and I ended up with second. Next up was HWGP with me running in first from another great start. Robert Pretts was on me the whole race but I held him off for the WIN. Last race of the weekend was the UNLGP and I finished up with a fourth. I was a fun weekend and the DUNLOP USA tires help up great. We used the same front all weekend and only two DOT rears. Next race weekend we are going to try the USA Slicks as we did not get a chance to try them this weekend.
Lots of family fun
Levi supported us all weekend. Mason got his license and raced both days. My grandma and grandpa were there to watch. A great church service. Friends Family and FUN.
Thank You to my Mom and Dad and all our sponsors for making this weekend possible.

CRA MAY RACEWEEKEND 2012
I need to start off with Thank you
Before I start with the the CRA May race weekend review. I need to say THANK YOU to Jeff Japp, My Dad, Grandma and Granda D. THANK YOU

Mason dropped a valve on the new Moriwaki motor we had just put in on Friday May 11th. The motor was tore apart Sunday at Jeff’s. Parts were ordered on Monday. Next day aired for Tuesday delivery. Jeff works till 6:00pm. My dad meet him at his house at 7:00pm to start on the motor. I did not get to see my dad for three days. He would be gone to work when I got up and would not get home till long after I went to bed. Thank you Jeff, Dad Grandma and Grandpa
The long track at BIR
Friday practice start off good. I tried to get up to speed quick. I really like the Brainerd long track. It is really fun to come flying into turn 1, 6th gear pinned. When you are flying around turn one you can feel the bike fighting for grip as you are being pulled to the outside edge of the track. The DUNLOP USA DOTs worked great. I love to go fast and the first session of practice I was running about the same times as last year. I knew I was faster than last year. The next session we were having trouble with the bike cutting out. It would cut power then regain power so it was a violent shake every time. I just had to ride through it to get bike set up done. My dad and John would have to work on it after practice. Friday practice ended and I was about 2 seconds off the leaders times, but I am always faster in the races.

My dad and John Anderson worked well into the night going through my whole entire bike. They went through it and did not really find anything but one little wire that looked a little suspicious. They resoldered it and hoped it would run good in Saturdays practice. If the little wire did not work then they would have me come in and unplug the quick shifter to see if that was it.
Mason has to take the new riders school
Masons day started on friday with the new riders school class room section at 7:00 am. Shane Keavney was the instructor so we new it would not be a waist of time. Shane is a great guy and Fast. After the class room section there was two new rider practice session. Mason was flying.
Everyone had lunch and the new riders started to practice in slow practice. Mason was riding great. At the end of the day they grided up all the new rides for a mock race. Mason was working his way to the front of the field and they meatballed him. Mason came in the next lap around and they told him to go to his pit. Mason was upset. No one had told him why. After the race was over. The race stewart told Mason he was not to have been in the race because they were not going to give him his license. My dad and the stewart talked a little more.
Saturday
Saturday practice started off great! I went out for practice and the bike did not cut out at all! In the second practice I went out and right away it was back to cutting out. I came in and my dad unplugged the quick shifter. The bike ran great after that. I would have to race with no quick shifter for the rest of the weekend. All the races on Saturday were in wet/dry conditions. It would rain, dry out, rain, dry out. It was really hard to guess if DOTs or rains would be better. We made a lot of tire changes on Saturday. We kept going from DOTs to rains and back to DOTs. It was a long day. I had a 5th in MWSS, 5th in HWSS, and a 9th in UNLSS going into the trophy dash race. I ended the day with a great ride in the GP3 race with a 2nd place finish. I had a pretty good day but I think tomorrow will go a lot better.

The stewarts told Mason he could practice and they would evailuate him in practice. If he did good they would allow him to race the ULSS race. Mason went out and push hard as he always does. They alowed him to race the ULSS race but he would have to start in the third wave by himself. The stewart told my dad to tell Mason to hold his line when they started to lap him. My dad told Mason you know what to do. Mason finished third from about fourty seconds back. Than the stewart came over and told my dad that they put Mason in the GP1 trophy dash. I think Mason won his class but it was hard to tell. Two classes on track and than expert and novice in each. Still don’t know. Mason rode great all day.
Sunday
Sunday practice started and it was pouring rain! I was one of the only guys that practice that morning. It was looking like it would dry out for the first race. I was right. It had dried out some but it was still wet for DOTs. My first race went great! I had a nice first place finish to start off the day. I was so happy! I got my first win on the new R6! The day still went a lot better than Saturday and I ended up with a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and a 6th in HWGP!

The race of the day for my dad had to have been the ULSB race. It had dried out and he made a last minute desision to put slicks back on Mason Moriwaki MD 250H. Just as they anounced third call he finished saftey wiring the front end. We took the tire warmers off. Mason rolled out from under the canopy and it started to down pour. My dad told me he had just blew it.
The race started and we waited for the riders to come around. As the first wave came around we noticed most of the racers were on rains. Than the second wave started are way. Mason was leading and on his way to chase down the first group. It was awesome. He won his class and realed in most of the experts. It was a great race to watch. Mason finished the day with a 1st and a 2nd.

After the races were over we removed the Air fence and headed to Pizza Ranch for some dinner with John Anderson, Jim Wiles, Jason Knoll, Dave and our family. It was a great way to wrap up the weekend before heading home. Thank You for buying dinner Jim.

This was a great weekend and I had a ton of fun! I have to give a huge thank you to my dad and John for going through my bike on Friday night. To Jason Knoll at Dunlop. I think Jason touched every rim we had with at one time or another this weekend and we only ran one new tire all weekend. I also have to give a huge thank you to my mom for getting up early and making me waffles every Moring before practice. If it wasn’t for you guys and your dedication to my racing this amazing weekend would have never happened.
