Road America 2012

Mason De Keyrel Wins the USGPRU MD 250 race.

Mason- It was great to have my first ever win be a USGPRU race. I lead the race from start to finish. I just kept my head down and pushed as hard as I could. It was alot of fun.

Kaleb De Keyrel 2nd in ASRA Pro Race

Kaleb De Keyrel finished second place in the ASRA Pro Sportbike race.
Kaleb-It was a really great feeling to get second in an ASRA pro race. I know the next step will be AMA. I am only 14 right now and will turn 15 in June. I have a year till I race my first AMA race. I feel that this race was a very big accomplishment for me and a really big confidence buster for the next couple races in Brainerd. I know we were running a couple seconds off AMA times but it was raining most of the time too. I think this is a great step for my racing career and the hard work is starting to pay off.

The weekend started with Apex Friday Practice

Mason-The weekend started out with Friday practice. I started to learned the track and got used to the elevation change and the long straights. I was having alot of fun and was glad to be at Road America racing for the first time.

The weekend started out

Kaleb-The weekend started out with Friday practice put on by Apex. It was cold and windy; I hadn’t been on the bike for two weeks. I started off slow and worked my way up to the pace of the leaders. I got up to pace by the second session so I started to push the next couple session and felt good about Saturday.

Saturday did not start out so good. I am a really good rain rider and it was raining so I was really happy. The first practice session went great. I was running really awesome times in the rain and I felt good about the next practice session. In the second session I was going really well. I went out right in front Ricky (who was one of the fastest 600 riders at Topeka.) I knew if I could stay in front of him for this session I would be set for the race. So I started to push and I was pulling away from him. I didn’t have my knee down yet. I knew if I added to much lean angle I would tuck the front but I didn’t like the feeling of not having my knee on the ground. I don’t know why, but that feeling just makes you feel more connect to the bike. With my knee down I could gain a few more seconds a lap. So the next corner I remember telling myself if you just carry in a little more lean angle and right then and there I tucked the front in turn 13. So I

road back in the crash truck pretty disappointed in myself. I knew real champions would forget this and move on. I got back to the rig and got my head on straight. Then I focused for the first race, while my dad prepared the bike. I have to give him a huge thank you for getting me back together for the first race. I went out for the first race and noticed the right bar was really pushed forward and the left bar was pushed really far back. ( 4mm and 5mm) This was my fault because I didn’t check the bars before I went out. I would just have to push through it. The race started out with a bad start and I would have to make up a lot of positions. I ended up fourteenth but I knew I would do a lot better in the next race. I have to give Yamaha Champions School

a lot of credit for that race, because of one of the drills they do. It’s called championship lap they basically give you a problem on your bike like your seat is on fire so you have to stand up the whole lap and I think that really helped me with that race because the bars were in the wrong position.

The second race started off with a good start and I was running up front. There was a big pack of six of us and the three guys up front started to pull away. I couldn’t hold the pace yet so I dropped back and road it in for sixth.

The next race started off with a great start and I was feeling great! I was again in the pack at the front and this time I was going to hold up there and push with these guys. I was having a good battle with Bart who was running fourth and was on him on the last lap. But then a guy on a

Suzuki stuffed me going into the last corner. I realized he was going to have a horrible drive out of the last corner leading on to the final straight. So I drafted him before the uphill and passed him. Then I drafted Bart coming up the hill and passed him to take fourth. Overall I think Saturday went really good I got over the practice crash and got back up to speed. I knew Sunday would go a lot better.

Sunday

I got a really good night sleep. Woke up and went for a run. I felt really good about how the day was going. It was raining and freezing cold again. Practice went great! I didn’t go down and was running really good times in the rain. Race one started off with a great start I jump right into the lead and then Ricky passed me into turn 3. Then Barrett long passed me in turn 4 and I tried to

run up with him but it looked like they were pushing really hard. So I figured I’d just stay about two bike lengths behind and wait. Just as I did that Ricky tucked the front into turn 5. Now it was just me and Barrett. On the last lap I started to catch Barrett and real him in but I couldn’t catch him in time. I would just have to take second in this race. The next race I got another great jump and was running second right behind Ricky again. But again I just wasn’t close enough to make a move. Another second place. The next race was the ASRA PRO superbike race and I already had two second’s for the day. I felt great and knew I could still do better. I remember being so cold at the start of this race. I was shivering really bad and I honestly didn’t even know if I could pull in the clutch lever. This race didn’t start out as good as the others but I still was first into turn one. It really started to down pour before this race and I was already soaked from the first two races and I was freezing. But everyone has to ride the same track with the same weather so I would just have to ride through it. I ended up second in my first ASRA Pro race. I was pumped. . The last race of the day the rain was still coming down and I got another great start, first into turn one. Barrett and Ricky got me coming into turn 3. I got a great drive out of turn three and was running right with them till the last lap and coming out of turn 14. I was holding the throttle wide open but the bike was cutting out. I think it had something to do with the electrical getting wet or something with the stator. I still brought it in for 3rd and overall we had a great weekend. I learned a ton and had a lot of fun!

De Keyrel Racing invited to Ducati Minneapolis Rideday at BIR

De Keyrel Racing recieved a phone call about a track day at Brainerd International Raceway. We were told the trackday was being put on by Ducati Minneapolis and that everything was taken care of. Just show up ride and have fun.

It was supposed to be rainy and cold all day. I did not care. It was free track time and beside we race when it is raining and cold. The day started off with some sprinkles here and there but it ended up being sunny and warm. I started off slow and worked on hitting my apexâ?‚??„?s. Then sense I knew I had my apexes down I started to push. I got one great session in and then when the bike start to act up. When it would get warm it would start to cut out. My dad checked all the electrical connections. The next session I worked my pace up and the bike started to cut out again. I came off to prevent anymore damage to the bike.

After lunch I mounted up John baklunds GoPro on to my bike and followed him around a couple of laps. I shot some video and I think he found some ways to make up time on the track.

?

The next session I went out and the bike started to cut out right away. So I came in. Up untill now it had been about 15 to 20 minutes into the session before it would act up. It was awesome to get on the track before the first CRA race and find this problems out. I had a great time at the Ducati Minneapolis trackday. There were some fast riders there and we just got to hang out with some awesome people.

?

Mason was riding great. He had only been on the track for a try the track session before. So this was his first chance to go all out. Masons day ended early with another motor failure. This was the motor we had just bought with only four races on it. It may have been a short day for Mason but a very vailuable one. It was track time at BIR where he would have to be watched to get his license the following weekend.

?

A huge THANK YOU to DOOM Ducati owners of Minneapolis Jon Meyer and Jon Baklund.

Ducati Minneapolis, My mom for letting us makeup school and my dad for all his hard work.

De Keyrel Racing goes to the Indy dealer show

De Keyrel Racing heads off to the Indy dealer show with new local sponsor Simply Sport Bikes. Simply Sports Bikes ( SSB ) Eric DeVaan invited the De Keyrel Racing team with SSB granting entry and picking up the hotel bill. SSB is looking forward to a great year with the De Keyrel’s and there team stated Eric DeVaan.

The De Keyrels had a plan when it came to the show.

The De Keyrel Racing Team had a plan when it can to the Indy dealer show. Most would think in search of new sponsors. Not for the De Keyrel’s. The goal was to thank existing sponsors for there support and put faces to names. With the De Keyrels living in MN. Most of the sponsor contact is done by emails. This was there opportunity to meet and Thank sponsors face to face.

First booth inside the door was Tucker Rocky ( TR ). Local TR rep for the De Keyrel’s is Steve Kroyer ( Pictured above ). Steve lined up a meeting for the De Keyrel Racing team with the VP of Marketing at TR Hank Desjardins. It was a great sit down meeting with both parties learning alot about each others programs. Thank you Steve and Hank for your time.

The next booth the De Keyrels headed to was Helmet House ( HH ). HH sponsors the De Keyrel Racing team with Cortech leathers. The De Keyrel had met Dan Thomas And Richard Kimes at the Road America Pro race last year. Dan and Richard were both there and the De Keyrels were able to thank them for there support. Dan lined them up with the new measuring charts for suits in 2012. The De Keyrels were also finally able to meet Mark Grandy with HH. Another face to a name. It was a great day for the De Keyrel racing team already and they had only hit two of the many booth at the show.

HJC Helmets was next.

The next booth to hit for the De Keyrel racing Team was HJC Helmets. Knowing ahead of time that Steve Hong ( the De Keyrels contact for HJC ) was not going to be there. Kaleb wanted to see what new paint sceams my have been launched for the 2012 season. Kaleb said this is it. ( see picture above ) the new 71 helmet. For 71 years in business for HJC Helmets.

Like any good race Team you need to statagize your pit stops. Seeing an opportunity they headed in that direction. That is when they ran into another Team sponsor Chris Onwiler from Trackdaymag.com. The De Keyrel Team thank him for his support. The De Keyrels had not seen Chris since Road America last year. It was awesome for them to meet up again.

New sponsor for 2012

Sean and Aaron Colton wanted to introduce the De Keyrels to Garry Gallagherof EBC Brakes. Garry has been a long time sponsor of Aaron. Garry told the De Keyrels that if the Coltons brought you over to us. Consider your self on the team. Where would you like your product sent to? Garry handed Kaleb a bunch of stickers and said he would send am email out with the new EBC team logo. Thank You Sean, Aaron and Garry.

The De Keyrels had signed with Akrapovic the week before and had set a meeting up to meet with Michael Larkin. The De Keyrel team walked up to introduce themselves to Michael. Michael was excited to meet the De Keyrels. He got them all a new Akrapovic T-shirt. Told them there is exhaust systems in the mail. Michael went over sticker placement and that there is a race only Logo. Doug pulled up the De Keyrel Racing sit on the Ipad and Michael noticed the logo needed to be changed on the Website. Doug made a note of this and Michael staged for a picture. ( see above ) It was great to put another face to a name for the De Keyrelrs.

Zero Gravity was also a new sponsor for De Keyrel Racing this year. They headed over to meet Mike Lira. The De Keyrels thanked Mike for the product they had received and for the support in 2012. Another face to a name.

Silkolene has been a sponsor for a year now and they still have not had the opportunity to meet face to face. It finally happened at the Indy dealer show. Jim Ricci SR and Jr were both in the booth. Doug talked over the product that De Keyrel Racing had been using and what was going to be used this year. The De Keyrels thank Jim SR and JR for the product and support of the team for the past year and this year.

It had been a long day with lots of great meetings. Doug talked to Tommy Haydon about a bike that Tommy had bought from the De Keyrels. They ran into Mike Larson from Larson cycle who mountain bike races with the De Keyrel boys. Chase Sellards, Sean and Aaron Colton hung out for the day. Hit the industry party for dinner and than off to TGI fridays to watch the supercross races.

Thank you to Simply Sport Bikes for making this trip happen for De Keyrel Racing.

Kaleb De Keyrel races with Team World Wide for the win

Team World Wide

Team World Wide Wins the GP3 class in the CRA 5 Hour Endurance race. Team owner John Anderson said “We went in with the intensions of just finishing and having a great time. GOD really has blessed us with the win in GP3 and 3rd overall”. We had a strategy at the beginning of the race and we pretty much stuck to it. The plan was to have Kaleb De Keyrel start and run till the fuel light came on. This had Kaleb first stint at about 52 minutes.

When Kaleb came in we checked tire wear

Kaleb came in we checked tire wearWhen Kaleb came in we checked tire wear and sent Chris Stellenger out next. The Michelin tires were wearing great. I had Tommy Mason mount up a B rear just in case we would need it at the next stop. Chris ran until the fuel light came on too. Amanda was already doing the math for fuel stops to minimize them. We also wanted to keep Chris and Kaleb out the must in the race but needed each rider to do at least a 1/2 hour per the rules. I was up next. It was decided that Amanda would do the math on fuel and time I spent on the track and Doug De Keyrel (Kaleb’s Dad) our pit board person for the day would signal me in. Doug signaled to Chris with the board he was at the 45 minute mark in his stint. The next lap Chris signaled he was coming in. The crew prepared for a rear tire and fuel only. The stop went just as planned and I was on the track. Amanda had figured I needed to run about 37 minutes. I did not know how long I was going to have to run because this was added up after I had left the pit. They took Kaleb’s 52 minutes and Chris’s 47 minutes and came up with my stint. I was running smooth and having a blast. When I saw the 35 minute board for me I was hoping they were getting ready to pull me in. The next lap around I got the PIT IN sign. I was relived. When I got to the pit the bike was fueled and had a new front tire on it with Kaleb taking off before I got a chance to tell anyone how much fun that was.

Kaleb road till the light again

Kaleb road till the light again and was able to get 58 minutes out of the tank this time. The crew had made sure it was completely full before sending him out. Kaleb came in for fuel and a rear tire. I was another great stop. Chris was back on the bike with a completely full tank this time too. Amanda was worried we may have to do a splash and go with Chris before sending Nate out for the final stint. Nate needed to ride a minimum of 30 minutes and no more than 52 minutes. Amanda had figured at his weight that would be about the max time on a tank of gas. Chris was able to stretch the fuel to 52 minutes. This worked out perfectly. Nate would ride the last 45 minutes of the race. Nate’s goal was to stay on two wheels and take the checkered flag. Nate accomplished his goal and the Team accomplished more than they had hoped for. The Graves equipped Yamaha R6 was a great bike to ride and contributed to this win. Thank You to a great crew and all our sponsors.

It was a great Team Effort

It was a great team effort. Thank You to John Anderson for allowing Kaleb to race with his team.
